Rolex CPO Warranty: What You Need to Know

For collectors, buying a pre-owned Rolex is about more than finding the right reference. Authenticity, condition, service history, and peace of mind all play an important role in the decision.

In December 2022, Rolex introduced the Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) programme, offering collectors a more official way to purchase previously owned Rolex watches. Each eligible timepiece goes through Rolex’s certification process before being offered for sale through participating Official Rolex Retailers. Most importantly, every Rolex CPO watch comes with a two-year international guarantee.

The Rolex Certified Pre-Owned programme was officially introduced in December 2022.

The programme was created to bring greater confidence to the pre-owned Rolex market. Eligible watches must be at least two years old and are inspected and authenticated before being certified as Rolex CPO.

For collectors, this creates a clear distinction between a Rolex that is simply pre-owned and one that has gone through Rolex’s official Certified Pre-Owned process.

Before a Rolex becomes Certified Pre-Owned, it undergoes a detailed examination by Rolex.

The watch’s authenticity and original configuration are checked, including its components and movement. Rolex also services the watch as required and tests its performance according to its standards.

If components need to be replaced, genuine Rolex parts can be used as part of the servicing process.

The purpose is not simply to confirm that the watch is genuine. The process is designed to ensure that the timepiece is functioning properly and meets the standards expected from a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watch.

One of the main advantages of Rolex CPO is its two-year international guarantee.

The guarantee begins on the date the Certified Pre-Owned watch is sold. The watch is supplied with a dedicated Rolex CPO guarantee card and a special seal identifying it as part of the programme.

For someone purchasing an older Rolex, this provides an additional level of confidence. Instead of relying only on the previous owner’s warranty or service records, the buyer receives a new guarantee associated with the Certified Pre-Owned purchase.

The Rolex CPO guarantee is supported by the certification and servicing process that takes place before the watch is sold.

Rolex states that Certified Pre-Owned watches are tested according to strict criteria and are intended to perform like new watches. However, some very old or vintage Rolex watches can have specific considerations, particularly regarding their original waterproofness and precision.

This is an important distinction for collectors. Vintage watches often have characteristics that are part of their history, and the goal is not necessarily to make every older Rolex identical to a modern model.

The CPO programme therefore combines several elements: authentication, servicing, testing, and a two-year international guarantee.

A regular pre-owned Rolex can still be an excellent choice. Collectors often consider factors such as originality, condition, provenance, service history, box and papers, and overall value.

The main difference is the involvement of Rolex itself.

With a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watch, the timepiece has gone through Rolex’s official certification process and is sold through a participating Official Rolex Retailer. It receives the CPO documentation and a new two-year international guarantee.

A regular pre-owned Rolex may have a remaining Rolex guarantee, a service warranty, or no active warranty, depending on its age, history, and circumstances of purchase.

For buyers who place particular importance on official Rolex authentication and certification, CPO offers a different level of assurance.
